Preparing for a HVAC Tech Career

As jobs are still scarce in today’s economic climate, there’s been a higher demand for Heating Ventilation Air & Cooling (HVAC) technicians. Obtaining a career in the HVAC tech industry can be rewarding. It can also be overwhelming to someone who is not familiar or certified to deal with that scope of work. 

A HVAC technician deals with the installation, repair, and maintenance of heating, cooling, refrigeration, and ventilation systems in both commercial and residential settings

How to Become Certified

Other requirements and recommendations include High School Diploma or General Education Degree. This will help increase your chances of getting in to a general trade or tech school or community college program.

In order to become a certified HVAC technician in the US, some companies require the completion of a training program known as the “Air Conditioning Excellence Technical Program".

However, all perspective HVAC technicians must receive a certification under the Environmental Protection Agency (CPA). The EPA requires anyone that will be working with a controlled refrigerant to complete the requirements needed for a Section 608 Certification.

Tech Schools or Colleges for HVAC Technicians

There are technical schools and courses that prepare individuals for a career as an HVAC Technician. Remington College in Memphis, Tennessee has a renowned program at that gives technicians on the job experience and the certification required to become an HVAC Technician.

Finding a Job as an HVAC Technician

The majority of HVAC companies prefers or requires their technicians to have formal training, both in and out of the classroom. Some may include some kind of apprenticeship, internship, or on the job training experience, as well.

How to Prepare for a Career in HVAC

It’s easy to prepare for a career in the HVAC industry and interested prospects can start as early as high school. High school students can take certain classes in blueprint reading, shop, math, applied physics, and other related classes.

 On the Job Experience

The average day in the life of an HVAC technician is not as cut and dry as other traditional jobs. That’s why it’s important for an HVAC technician to stay in shape. A technician may have to bend down and around to reach hard to reach problematic areas.

 A technician is responsible for carrying out the following tasks:

·         Testing electric circuits and surges with high tech electric test equipment

·         Controlling the overall heating and humidity levels of a home

·         Repairing cooling and heating ventilation systems

·         Inspection and testing of HVAC system to ensure it complies with code standards mandated by either state or local municipal government entities. 

Train for a Career in HVAC Tech

To start your journey into a new career as a HVAC Technician you can start enrolling in either your local vocational, community college, or trade school programs specializing in HVAC. Most programs take at least 2 semesters to complete while others can take up to 2 full academic years.

What to Expect

Jobs in the HVAC industry are growing at a promising rate. HVAC technicians can expect to find a range of issues to deal with from controlling a home’s overall temperature and air conditioning and heating systems from humidity to refrigeration related issues.

Job Outlook

Data from the U.S. Bureau of Statistics forecasts HVAC tech jobs to grow faster than other similar industry related jobs with the same education and training requirements through 2018.  The average wage for an HVAC technician in 2009 was $19.76 per hour.  Statistics also reveal the average median salary of $41,1000 the same year.
